Formula E, the racing championship for electric cars, is poised to make its foray into India. Organizers have already announced that the race will take place on February 11, 2023, in Hyderabad for the 2022–2023 season.
In 2013, the Buddh International Circuit in Greater Noida hosted three Formula 1 races of the Indian Grand Prix before the motorsport got forced to abandon its Indian experience. It was because of a tax conflict between the Indian organizers Jaypee Group and the state government. It was the nation’s last significant international event.
The championship, which will have 18 races between January and July 2023, will have two new hosts in Hyderabad, India, and Sao Paulo, Brazil, as per ABB FIA Formula E.
Telangana government had already signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) with the state government earlier this year to work toward its lofty goal of becoming a national hub for electric vehicles (EV).
The announcement that Hyderabad will host Round 4 of Formula E’s 22–23 season has energized India’s motorsports fan base, which has recently experienced rapid growth following a thrilling 2021–22 Formula 1 season that ended in Abu Dhabi amid some controversy.
The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship’s Season 9 calendar is its most extensive and dynamic racing schedule to date, according to Alberto Longo, Co-Founder and Chief Championship Officer, and they are eager to get it started.
Along with maintaining the hugely popular races in Diriyah, Mexico City, Berlin, Monaco, Rome, and London, he also predicted that Formula E would continue to push the boundaries of all-electric street racing internationally with the E-Prix in Hyderabad and Sao Paulo. Jakarta and Seoul are also on the calendar.
The first net-zero carbon race car in the world, the Gen3, will also debut during the upcoming Formula E season.
However, Formula 1 recently revealed that it is creating a fuel that is 100% sustainable to power its next-generation hybrid cars. It is because motorsport wants to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2030.
9th Season of Formula E World Championship 2022-2023
The series and the FIA released the provisional schedule for the ABB Formula E World Championship’s 9th season. It got approved by the FIA World Motor Sport Council and had the backing of regional ASNs (national motor clubs) for each city-based event. The series officials have stated that they hope to add a US race and a race in Cape Town, South Africa, even though the tentative calendar once again does not include any US races.
The new Gen3 race car debuted at the Goodwood Festival of Speed and will get introduced this season.
With three potential additions already scheduled, the calendar has 18 races between January and July 2023 on street circuits in 13 cities, breaking the previous mark of 16 races in 10 other cities this season. On January 14 at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City, the new Gen3 cars will make their racing debut.
Only one city to host an E-Prix in each of the championship’s nine seasons has been Berlin, but Formula E will return to Seoul and Jakarta after their inaugural events this year.
Jakarta will play host to a larger doubleheader of races in the coming season.
Diriyah, Saudi Arabia, will host a night race doubleheader on January 27th and 28th. Other races taking place on the schedule include Monaco, Rome, and London.
The FIA-recognized world championship expanded quickly over the years and features participation from the top automobile manufacturers in the world. It includes Mercedes, Porsche, Nissan, and India’s Mahindra Racing, which has competed in the all-electric series since it began in 2014.
The only Indian driver who participated in the competition was Karun Chandhok.
Fact: Mostly, the race calendar consists of improvised street circuits used as public roads on other days.
